Christ for the City - Costa Rica

The Christ for the City mission in Costa Rica serves Nicaraguan refugees in the squatter community of La Carpio. The mission’s goal is to bring the children and adults to Christ, while providing education and life skills needed to lift themselves out of poverty. Sunday worship services, Bible studies, Kids Bible Clubs, and counseling programs provide spiritual teaching and discipleship. The mission’s Carpio Christian Clinic, provides out-patient medical and dental care. The Life Institute provides academic support to help young women and men complete their education, remedial reading and math classes for children, and adult classes to teach skills that bring in income. The New Horizons (ReNuevos) program for kids offers Bible studies, team building, sports, crafts, and a safe after-school environment.OCF supports 4 missionaries from this impactful mission. As a nurse, Susan Grosser (one of the founders), provides nursing care, counseling and prayer at the clinic, distributes food vouchers for destitute families, teaches Sunday School, provides a daily devotional to 100+ women, and helps with the tutoring program, Bible lessons and weekly Bible Clubs for school age children. As a psychologist, Rocio (Chio) Vargas provides counseling and emotional support to many of the struggling immigrants, including weekly meetings with a group of young mothers called "Mamás Guerreras". Rocio also coordinates the church’s Sunday School and helps to coordinate the many short-term mission teams that volunteer at LaCarpio. As pastor of the church, Alvin Navarette (Chio’s husband) preaches, leads Bible studies, and provides pastoral counseling and mentoring. He also serves as Director of ReNuevos and coordinates the short-term mission teams. Axel Hernandez is the new worship leader and youth pastor.
